We are absolutely delighted to welcome one of our former teachers back into the Abelard fold. Allan Randall, who taught with us from 1998-2004, was a highly valued and respected member of our team. He left us to complete his doctorate, and that task now accomplished, he returns to us as Dr. Randall. A polymath, Dr. Randall holds a PhD in the Philosophy of Physics, an M.A. in the Philosophy of Mathematics, an M.Sc. in Computing and a B.Sc. (Hons) in Mathematics and Computer Science. In addition to his prior teaching experience at Abelard, he has extensive experience teaching mathematics, physics, chemistry, general science, computer science and philosophy at the university, college, secondary, middle and elementary school levels.
Also joining us, to teach Grade 10 Mathematics, is Mrs. Mariam Al-Hawaj. Mrs. Al-Hawaj has a B.Sc. in Mathematics and Computer Science and an M.Sc. in Pure Mathematics, and has completed the course work for a Ph.D. in Mathematics at the University of Toronto. She has also worked at the University of Toronto Math and Stats Learning Centre, and as a programme leader at the Department of Mathematics at U of T, where she developed an advanced-level math programme for high school students. Mrs. Al-Hawaj is passionate about imparting a love of mathematics to young people and runs a tutoring service for university and high school students to prepare them for mathematics competitions. We are delighted to have her on our staff.
Biology 11 is being taught this year by another new staff member, who also comes to us through U of T. Mr. David Zamparo has a Bachelor of Education degree from the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, and a Masters of Science in Zoology from the University of Toronto. He has taught courses in Invertebrate Diversity and Animal Diversity at the Department of Zoology at U of T, has produced 19 peer-reviewed publications, and has taught at the high school level as well as coordinating U of T’s National Biology Competition for high school students. We are very fortunate to have him join us.
Another addition to our staff this year is Abelard alumna Rebecca Brenner. A woman of many talents, Ms. Brenner has an honours B.Sc. in Psychology from the University of Toronto and is currently completing her second year of a Master’s degree at OISE. She is also an accomplished dancer and dance teacher, and made her debut as a violinist with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra in 2002. She has also performed with the Canadian Opera Company and is a professional television actress. Abelard is thrilled to welcome her back to our school as a teacher.
