Senior Students Spend the Day in Special Lectures at the University of Toronto
Last Friday, many of our Grade 11 and 12 students participated in the SPUR Festival‘s Young Scholars Program, through which they attended a series of special lectures at the University of Toronto. The lectures covered a range of topics, from Mathematics to the Cold War to the Mind-Body Problem. They were delivered by a host of excellent speakers drawn primarily from the U of T community, though among them was former Mayor David Miller.
The Young Scholars Program was designed to give high school students a chance to experience a unique day of learning at the University of Toronto, and to participate in lectures and discussions on topical issues. Abelard was thrilled to be invited and hopes to take part again next year in such a wonderful experience.
SPUR Toronto ran from April 3 – 6. SPUR Calgary will take place April 25 – 27.
It is with fondness that we say goodbye to our previous Physics teacher Dr. Scott Beattie, who is leaving the Abelard School to pursue a permanent research position at the National Research Council in Ottawa. Dr. Beattie has been teaching part-time at Abelard for the past two years, while conducting post-doctoral research at the University of Toronto. While we’re sad to see him go, we wish him much success in his new role.
Replacing Dr. Beattie is Chris Luciuk, a PhD candidate at the University of Toronto and a member of Dr. Beattie’s former laboratory group in the Department of Physics. Mr. Luciuk is working towards his PhD in Experimental Physics, and looks forward to sharing his passion for science and inquisitive thinking with his Grade 12 Physics students.
Welcome to the Abelard School, Mr. Luciuk!
Thanks to all who came and supported our school fundraiser at the University of Toronto’s Faculty Club last Thursday. It was wonderful to see so many current and past members of the Abelard community (re)connecting over dinner. The silent auction was a tremendous success, and the student entertainment, as always, was outstanding. Thank you to everyone for supporting our school’s scholarship fund and helping to make this year’s holiday party a success!
The Abelard School’s annual Holiday Fundraising Dinner is fast approaching! Please join us for fabulous food, fascinating conversation, captivating entertainment, door prizes, and a silent auction. Meet and become better acquainted with other members of the Abelard community. Bring your family and friends!
Dinner tickets cost $130 per person,* with proceeds benefiting our scholarship program.
*$100 for current Abelard students, and $110 for Abelard alumni.
